First off thanks for the site, at least I know now that I am not completely insane.
I was born and raised here, have lived in So Cal for the last five years and just moved back (my company moved me). What the hell happened in my absence?

Sam's Club vs. Costco-who cares!

I am from the South ( an proud of it) & I have been here 3 long, spirit-killing years. I have a Sam's Club card and anytime I mention to people here that I shop there, I get this HUGE lecture about it. EVERY time it has come up in casual conversation, I get a list of reasons why Costco is so much better and how I am the devil for shopping at Sam's Club. It is like they are trying to do an intervention on me!

Seattle is a prickly fruit

Of course most major cities have their uniquely lame characteristics and I’ve lived in a few of them but I have never felt such a need to rant about it. I’m thankful for the transplants in this city (many of whom are my friends) that haven’t been tainted by this colorless social landscape.

Back to Cali, out of this social wasteland

I grew up in the Bay Area until I was 10. From there I moved to Seattle, which my mother and I thought was a great place for a long time. I thought it strange that I couldn't make many friends outside of youth sports and that I got really depressed every February/March.

Northwest Cities

I have lived in Seattle and Vancouver, BC. I love them both. My wife and I visit Seattle at least twice a year.
Ways Vancouver is better than Seattle (some of these might seem silly):
*Vancouver's setting is more spectacular.
*Proximity of mountains and hiking trails.
*Beaches close to Downtown.
*Stanley Park/Seawall.
*Restaurants (especially Chinese & Japanese) are superior.
*Better aquarium.
*More cosmopolitan.
*Better public transit.
*More happening night life

Well, this is the ultimate. It's beyond unfriendliness, it's totally bizarre and the craziest thing is that when I tell people, they say, "Yeah that's Seattle for you." WHOA!!

I came here from Boston a decade ago and was astounded within two days at how hick, damaged and strange it is but Boston's too expensive now so I play the hand I'm dealt.

Lou Pate, 710 KIRO's top-rated talk host, has been featuring this site most approvingly on his overnight show from time to time. Great publicity for the "Shmengers!"

Hello,
I grew up in Ellensburg during the late 60's and early 70's, and spent a lot of time in Seattle. It definitely didn't suck back then, and the best coffee in town was Yuban!! Seattle was known for J.P. Patches, intense outdoor activity, great jazz, the gateway to Alaska, and as one of the most livable cities in the U.S. according to many polls taken back then.

seattle sucks but here's why I like it

I lived in Seattle during the 90s and now live in NYC. I return regularly to visit friends and although I enjoy seeing them, yes, Seattle is a little lame with regard to the social scene. However, I've learned to use this lameness to my advantage. I'll post other examples later but for now here's one - it's entitled "the art of buying a newly met woman a drink."
[Disclaimer - these comments are all directed at Seattle males who have a tendency to annoy the hell out of me.]

I like this site. Maybe it's the beginning of a much-needed exorcism of the chronically bad juju that permeates this city.

"Surface nice" is part of the problem

You know, the fact that drivers stop and let you cross the street, or that clerks in the shops are nice is part of the problem. It's so weird. Up at 145th near Shoreline, there was a grocery store, I think it was a Larrys and it's gone now, but for awhile you couldn't buy anything without the cashier saying, "Is this bread good?" or something about your food. They were told to do that - some manager's idea of being friendly - and it was so awful that they stopped and then they were wearing buttons that said "I won't feed you any phony baloney." I really don't want to have to answer questions about my groceries when I'm buying them. Duh, of course I think it's goood or I wouldn't buy it!
