Just look for temporary stays in craigslist.com - New York - tons of ads I see every now and then. Stay in a nice neighborhood in Brooklyn, since Manhattan is horrendously expensive. Once you're there you can feel out the area for jobs and contacts. You'll find that it's easier to meet new people there. Join clubs and activities, take fun classes, etc. to meet new people. It takes a while to make new contacts, but you can do it. It's not like moving to Seattle from a gregarious place and then feeling all left out and lonesome because people are hermits here. Also, you may want to research sites like monster.com and hotjobs to get an idea of jobs and salaries in your line of work. Hope this helps. Take care, and peace and joy to you.
